Caxambu
Caxambu, a thermal resort with mineral springs and elegant hotels, lies in the extreme south of Minas Gerais 370km/230mi south of Belo Horizonte, 30km/19mi north of São Lourenço and 288km/179mi north-west of Rio de Janeiro. Situated in an upland region with agreeable temperatures ranging between 15°C/59°F and 25°C/77°F, it was a resort much favored by the Brazilian imperial family in the 19th century. Its mineral springs, which were then already being used in the treatment of stomach, liver and kidney diseases and sterility, were also appreciated by Dom Pedro II.
Caxambu is now a quiet resort patronized by elderly people. Its mineral water is sold in plastic containers throughout Brazil.
