This little town was the scene of a battle in the War of the Emboabas (1708-09) between the bandeirantes of São Paulo and Portuguese and other adventurers heading into the mining region from other parts of Brazil. (Emboabas was the name given to those from outside São Paulo who moved into Minas Gerais during the gold rush of the early 18th century.)
