Cachoeiro do Itapemirim

Cachoeiro do Itapemirim, now the most important town in the south of Espírito Santo state, was founded by garimpeiros (gold- and diamond-prospectors) in the 18th century. It lies near the first waterfall on the Rio Itapemirim, half way between the Serra and the sea, 46km/29mi from the coastal town of Marataízes and 239km/148mi south-west of Vitória.

Serras

34km/21mi north of Cachoeiro do Itapemirim, in the highlands of central Espírito Santo, is the Serra de Vargem Alta. If, however, you follow BR 482, which runs through the town, and then turn west to reach the road to Carangola (Minas Gerais), you come to the Serras da Aliança, do Horizonte and das Cangalhas, between the Cachoeiro do Itapemirim area and the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. In Alegre, 60km/37mi west of Cachoeiro do Itapemirim, leave BR 482 and take ES 185, which runs past Caparaó National Park.
