14km/8.7mi south of Cabo Frio is Arraial do Cabo (pop. 25,000), where Amerigo Vespucci built a fort in 1503. The town's present-day attractions are its marvelous beaches, its sand dunes and numerous islets.
To the south of Arraial do Cabo are the Praia do Forno, with the ruins of the Fortaleza do Marisco, the Praia do Pontal do Atalaia and the little beach of Prainha. To the west, in the direction of Araruama Lagoon, are the beaches (with numerous dunes) of Praia Grande and Restinga da Massambaba.
On the Praia dos Anjos, in the center of the town, is the 16th century church of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos (Our Lady of the Angels). From here there are boats to the island of Cabo Frio, with the Gruta Azul (Blue Grotto), an underwater cave with clear blue water, and the Praia do Farol.
