Antonina lies om Paranaguá Bay at the foot of the Serra da Graciosa, 52km/32mi north-east of Paranaguá and 76km/47mi east of Curitiba. The town was founded on July 12th 1643 by settlers from São Paulo. It preserves many 18th and 19th century buildings.

A fine example of earlier local architecture is the railway station (Estação Ferroviária), built in 1916. The station was closed down in 1977, and the building now houses a museum on the history of the town.
