Anchieta lies on the Atlantic coast in the south of Espírito Santo state, 102km/63mi south of Vitória. The Spanish Jesuit José de Anchieta died in 1597 in the village of Reritiba, now Anchieta. The Festa de Anchieta is celebrated annually on June 9th.
There are good beaches at Doce (to the north), Gorda (6km/4mi south) and the central Praia do Monte Aghá, with a 300m/1000ft high hill which from time immemorial has been a landmark for seafarers and is now popular with rock-climbers.

In the center of the town are the beaches of Anchieta, Coqueiro, Balanço and Mar Vila; to the north, in the direction of Guarapari, near the Mãe-Bá Lagoon, are the beaches (monazite sand) of Castelhanos (4km/2.5mi), Guanabara (5km/3mi), Ubu (8.5km/5.5mi) and Mãe-Bá (14km/8.7mi); and to the south are Iriri (monazite sand) and the Praia dos Namorados ("Lovers' Beach").

Nossa Senhora da Assunção
Of the original church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção (1587), now protected as a national monument, there remain the sacristy and a two-story part of the building known as the Cela de Anchieta. Beside the church is the little Padre Anchieta Museum.

12km/7.5mi south of Anchieta is Piúma (pop. 7000), founded by Padre Anchieta, known as "Shell Town" because of its local craft. There is a procession by land and sea on June 29th (SS Peter and Paul).
