Brandenburg Cathedral

The Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul (begun 1165) on Brandenburg's Dominsel (Cathedral Island), is a Romanesque basilica with extensive alterations in Gothic style. In the crypt (1235) is a memorial chapel (1953) commemorating Christians murdered during the Second World War.
The "Bunte Kapelle" ("Painted Chapel") has Late Romanesque wall paintings. Notable features of the richly furnished interior are the 13th C. stained glass, the Romanesque crucifix, the 14th C. Bohemian Altar (showing the influence of Bohemian panel painting), the Lehnin Altar (1518), the Marienaltar (c. 1430), the Wagner Organ, the Angel Candelabrum (1441) and grave-slabs of bishops and canons. In the conventual buildings, parts of which have been preserved, are the cloister, the Cathedral Archives (valuable manuscripts) and the Cathedral Museum, with fine medieval vestments and the Brandenburg Lenten Veil (c. 1290). In front of the Cathedral is the Burghof, with the Cathedral offices.
