Sameiro Description

About 3km/2mi farther south from Bom Jesús do Monte, on Monte Sameiro (582m/1,910ft), is another pilgrimage church (20th C.). This is Portugal's second most visited pilgrimage site after Fátima. It is reached by an enormous modern flight of steps, with a statue of Pope Pius IX (1954) at the foot.
