Capela de Sao Frutuoso
In the suburb of Sao Jerónimo Real, 3km/2mi northwest of the town, is one of the oldest Christian buildings in Portugal, the Capela de Sao Frutuoso, founded by and named after an early bishop of Braga, Frutuoso de Dume (second half of seventh C.). The central part of the chapel and the east end date from the late seventh C. and show Byzantine influence - an unusual feature in Portugal.

Other parts of the chapel were rebuilt or added after its destruction by the Moors in the 11th C. The simple interior shows a variety of styles (Visigothic, Romanesque, Lombard). Against the rear wall of the chapel is the sarcophagus of Sao Frutuoso.
The saint's remains are now in the adjoining Baroque church of the former Franciscan convent, in which the chapel, which has a fine carved pulpit, was incorporated in the 18th C.
