Strokestown

Strokestown is a little town laid out on a regular plan about 1800, with workshops in which traditional Irish crafts are practised (exhibition and shop). Adjoining the town, in a large park, is a handsome country house belonging to Lord Hartland.

There are many prehistoric remains in this area. Most of these are to the west of Boyle, between the town and the village of Ballaghaderreen, to the southwest of Lough Gara.

Numerous pile dwellings and 31 boats have been excavated, as well as implements and ornaments. (The excavation site is not open to the public.)

Near Boyle, just off the R294 at Drumanone, is a large chambered tomb, with a massive capstone measuring 15x11ft/4.4x3.3m.
