Settlement in the Boonville area began around 1805, sons of Daniel Boone (Nathan and Daniel Morgan) began to commercially operate a salt lick. The first battle of the Civil War in Missouri was fought here in 1861.

The town has seven historic districts, with early to mid-19th century houses and public buildings.
