Description
The central feature of Bolzano is the Piazza Walther (Waltherplatz), named after the German minnesinger Walther von der Vogelweide (c. 1170-1230), with a monument to the poet (1889; Heinrich Natter). At the southwest corner of the square is the Gothic parish church (14th-15th centuries), which, like its counterpart in Bressanone, has the status of a cathedral. It has an elegant tower 65m/215ft high (1504-19) and a Lombard doorway; fine interior with a Late Gothic pulpit (1513-14) decorated with carved reliefs and frescoes of the 14th-15th century.
