Description
Designers of the firm had often made large colored models from Lego bricks for fairs and exhibitions, and these were greatly admired. This led to the setting up of a park with miniature buildings made of Lego bricks. On June 7, 1968 "Legoland" was opened near Billund. The extensive site, originally a barren area of heathland, became a large leisure park of various complexes. Every year over a million people visit the park.

The central feature is "Miniland". Well-known buildings from all over the world have been imitated in Lego bricks on a scale of 1:20, including Amalienborg Palace and the Nyhavn (harbor) of Copenhagen, an airport modeled on large Scandinavian airports, narrow gabled houses from Holland, the Emperor Wilhelm Memorial Church (Berlin), the Statue of Liberty (New York), the Wat-Phra-Keo Temple (Bangkok) and much more. Danish fishing villages and well-known sights such as the Dybbol Mill are also to be seen. Another attraction is "Lego Safari", with elephants, lions, zebras and other animals. There is also a revolving elevator which provides a panoramic view of Billund and the surrounding countryside, a Legorail giving rides around the complex, miniboats for a "round-the-world cruise", a giant wheel and a traffic school for children. In the "Lego Technic Land" workshop the whole family can build models. Pirateland and the Red Indian Camp offer exciting experiences for the youngsters.

Inside exhibitions

On the south side of the park is an Exhibition Hall. Of particular interest is the collection of dolls and dolls-houses, one of the world's largest with 500 exhibits dating from the 16th to the 20th C., and a collection of toys.

Of special interest, too, is "Titania's Palace", a palace created by the Englishman Sir Nevile Wilkinson for his little daughter, who believed she had seen elves in the garden. The palace was intended as a dwelling for the fairy queen Titania, her husband Oberon and their children. This palace, the rooms of which are furnished with valuable furniture, was auctioned by Christie's in London in 1978.

After paying the entrance fee all activities are free, with the exception of the driving school for which an extra charge is made. There are picnic sites and bistros in the park. The Legoland Hotel has a beautiful panoramic restaurant.
