On the northwest side of Grosse Schanze in Berne are the University, founded in 1834 (present buildings 1899-1930, with a monument to the Berne doctor and poet Albrecht von Haller (1708-77) in front of it, and the headquarters of the Swiss Federal Railroads (SBB-Direktion). To the left, beyond Schanzensrasse, is the Supreme Court (Obergericht, 1909).
