Archenhold Observatory

The Archenhold Observatory will be found in the south of Berlin's Treptow Park on the Alt-Treptow stretch of road. It was founded by the astronomer Friedrich Simon Archenhold and was built in 1896 on the occasion of the Berlin Industrial Exhibition held in the park. In 1909 it was extended and completed to the design of Konrad Reimer and Friedrich Körte.

Must-see attractions nearby:
The Observatory's main attraction is its gigantic telescope, 21 m/69ft long and weighing 130 tons. It is the largest in the world (lens diameter 68 cm/27 in). Since 1970 it has also housed a research unit concerned with the history of astronomy together with the Zeiss Planetarium (frequent special lectures).

Near the Observatory is Cosmonauts' Grove, dedicated to Soviet space flights. There are busts of Yuri Gagarin, the first cosmonaut, and of Sigmund Jähn, the first German in space.
