Berchtesgadener Land
The Berchtesgadener Land, once held directly from the Emperor by the Augustinian canons of Berchtesgaden, lies in the southeastern corner of Bavaria, driving a wedge into Austrian territory. It is enclosed by high Alpine peaks with precipitous rock faces.

Königssee
The Königssee (alt. 602m/1,975ft) is one of the great beauty spots of the Berchtesgadener Land. There is an attractive footpath along the east side of the lake to the Malerwinkel ("Painters' Corner"; superb views of the lake and the mountains). Another equally attractive possibility is a boat trip to the pilgrimage chapel of St Bartholomew (17th C.) at the south end of the lake and a walk from there to the Obersee (alt. 613m/2,011ft).
