Torhout, 23km/14mi northeast of Diksmuide, was an important market town in the Middle Ages. Sint Petersbandkerk with its typical octagonal tower, blown up in 1918 and again destroyed in 1940, has been rebuilt. The Stadhuis (1713) houses the Amand Maes Museum for faïences.
