On the instructions of Charles V Mariembourg, 16km/10miles northeast of Chimay, was fortified in 1546 in the shape of a star. The town gets its name from Maria of Hungary.

Mariembourg is the departure point of the nostalgic steam railroad "Trois Vallées", which chugs through the protected area of Viroin via Chimay to Momignies.
