Eeklo is situated 20km/12miles northwest of Ghent.
There are numerous interesting churches and chapels, such as the St Vincent Church and the chapel of the Holy Heart in Eeklo. The belfry and city hall have received the World Heritage Site designation from UNESCO.
Eeklo is the site of the Meetjeslandse Balloonmeeting at the end of July each year. Hot-air balloon enthusiasts from all over Belgium gather.
Three gardens with different styles. Thousands of roses can be found in the French garden while the English and Japanese are made up of ponds and rocks, respectively.

The Canada War Museum in Adegem-Maldegem documents the liberation of Flanders through a panoramic display of the assault on the Leopoldcanal. Realistic scenes allow visitors to experience war first-hand.

The Geneva house Van Hoorebeke is a place where visitors can sample an ancient family tradition. Storage rooms and presentations give an animated picture of the house and the social and economic evolution in Meetjesland.

Maldegem, 10km/6miles west of Eeklo, provides an interesting diversion. The 'Steam Center' has a number of steam locomotives, steam rollers, steam tractors and industrial steam machines.
Journey on a museum train from the steam center Maldegem to Eeklo or by narrow-guage railroad to Donk.
