Butgenbach Attractions

About 15km/9.5miles east of Malmédy lies the village of Bütgenbach, once part of the dukedom of Limburg and the property of the Herren von Valkenburg. The fortress and the castle were destroyed in 1689 by the French; still to be seen is a fine estate which dates from the 18th C.
Dam
In 1932 near Bütgenbach the Warche was dammed by a 23m/75ft-high wall and turned into a lake of 120ha/297 acres containing 11million cu.m of water (approx. 14million cu.yd). Since the completion of the leisure center of Worriken in 1979 the reservoir annually attracts numerous proponents of water sports and campers. The power station produces 2million kwh of electricity.
