Oostduinkerke, Belgium

Oostduinkerke, 3km/2mi east of Koksijde, is a fishing town and seaside resort.
The town has become popular for visitors to roam the nature reserves, sandy beach or promenade. The beach stretches for over 30 km. A major tourist attraction are the shrimpers on horseback!

Shrimp Fishing on Horseback

A type of shrimp fishing, which is unique in Europe, is practiced here. At the ebb tide the fishermen ride through the shallow water on sturdy cart-horses. The animals trail large nets behind them at a leisurely pace and from time to time the rider empties the catch into the baskets on the horse's back.

Shrimp Festival

The custom of shrimp fishing on horseback is celebrated in the annual shrimp festival held at the end of June, when a "Mieke Garnaal", a shrimp queen is chosen, complete with a procession of folklore groups, decorated coaches etc.

National Fishery Museum

The National Visserijmuseum (National Fishery Museum) is dedicated to the history and technology of fishing and has a collection of model fishing boats, instruments and tools. There are even reconstructions of a fishermen's tavern and cottage.

Florishof

The Florishof is a restored group of buildings which is now a folklore museum with exhibitions of furniture, lace and everyday objects.

Sint-Niklaaskerk

Sint-Niklaaskerk is an original building from 1954 with its pointed roofs and massive tower.
Unusual are the absence of a choir and the columns in the yellowish interior which seem to sprout out of the ground.
