Atalaia
4 hours from Belém by bus is Salinópolis, from which there are shuttle buses to the hotels on the Praia do Atalaia. During the school holidays (July and the second half of December) this 10km/6mi long beach is much overcrowded.
Ilha de Itaranajá
Some 12km/7.5mi off Salinópolis is the island of Itaranajá (area 1600 hectares/4000 acres), which can be reached by car at low tide and by boat at high tide. Its attractions are some 9km/5.6mi of sandy beaches, luxuriant forests and clear streams.
Ilha do Algodoal
The offshore island of Algodoal is also reached by way of Marudá. Tiny fishing boats run a kind of makeshift ferry service to this idyllic, car-free island with its unspoiled sandy beaches, dunes and freshwater lakes.
Praia Crispim
The Praia Crispim, north-east of Belém, can be reached by bus, via Marudá, in about 4 hours. The 16km/10mi long beach of white sand is completely undeveloped, with neither hotels nor restaurants.
