Bastogne - Mardasson Hill American Memorial

From Bastogne the kilometer-stones of the "Road to Freedom" lead 3km/2mi northeast to Mardasson Hill with its broad vista over the countryside around. Here in 1950 an impressive memorial was erected in honor of the 76,890 American soldiers who lost their lives during the Battle of the Ardennes. Built in the shape of a five-pointed star the monument bears the names of the units which took part in the battle, as well as recording details of the principal events. The crypt, decorated with mosaics by Fernand Léger, contains three altars, one Catholic, one Protestant and one Jewish.

Historical Center
The Bastogne Historical Center describes itself as "the finest war museum in the world", a claim which some might feel to be somewhat less than justified. Like the nearby American Memorial, the Center is built in the shape of a five-pointed star. Presentation takes three different forms. The central display consists of an amphitheater-like model of the battle illustrating the different phases of the action. This is surrounded by screens featuring authentic still photographs with commentaries in six languages. Next come collections of weaponry, tanks, military vehicles and uniforms, all fully authentic, together with groups of uniformed figures representing the main protagonists.

Finally there is a cinema which shows films of the Ardennes offensive made by the two sides.
