At the time of the Armenian principality of Vaspuragan, Baskale, in southern Van Province, was known as Hadamakert. It was the bastion from which the Ardsruni princes held out for a short time against the Bagratids from the north and the Arab Emir Yussuf from the south. Above the town are remains of a Kurdish fort.
