Baska Tablet Description
In the mid 1800s the Baska Tablet (Bascanska Ploca) was discovered in the floor of the Church of St Lucy (Crkva Sv Lucije) just outside of the town of Baska in the village of Jurandvor. The tablet carries an inscription in Glagolitic text and dates to the 11th Century. The content is similar to a deed, and formalizes a land transaction whereby the King of Croatia gave the land to the local parish. The Baska Tablet is regarded as the most important tablet of its kind. The original is now in the Croatian Academy of Arts and Science in Zagreb and a replica has been placed in the Church of St Lucy. This caused much controversy in the village of Jurandvor, where town's people tried to conceal the tablet and prevent its removal.
