Mojave National Preserve - Providence Mountains State Recreation Area

Providence Mountains State Recreation Area has red volcanic peaks that frame the high desert with dramatic views. A self-guiding nature trail begins near the visitor center - former home of Jack and Ida Mitchell, who ran a resort here from 1934 through 1954. Mitchell Caverns, about 15 miles north of I-40 off Essex Road is known for its limestone caves.

Mitchell Caverns
Mitchell Caverns is located in the Providence Mountains State Recreation Area, 60 miles west of Needles. The caves were opened in 1932 by Jack Mitchell and are the only limestone caverns in the California State Park system.
