The Mojave National Preserve was established in 1994 by the California Desert Protection Act. At 1.6 million acres it is the third largest National Park Service site outside Alaska.
The preserve begins 60 miles west of Barstow and runs along the Nevada border. Nearly 300 species of animals live in the preserve, including bighorn sheep, mule deer, porcupines and mountain lions.
