About 2 km (11/4 mi.) uphill from Williams Creek near Bakerville Historic Town, in the historic Richfield Courthouse, lives the ghost of the famous Judge Begbie, remembered for a number of episodes in his colorful career.
Richfield one of many gold mining towns established in the 1860s. The last remaining building standing in Richfield is the Richfield Courthouse. Judge Begbie presided here and was known more commonly as the "Hanging Judge". Visitors today can visit the old courthouse to experience the old days of the gold rush.
