Bangor - Penrhyn Castle
Penrhyn Castle (1mi/2km east of Bangor), which was built by Thomas Hopper in the neo-Norman style in 1827-40, is a reminder of the great days of Welsh slate-mining in the 19th century, when the Penrhyn Quarries, belonging to the Pennant family, produced 130,000 tons a year, roughly a quarter of the total Welsh output of slate. It is no surprise therefore to find the gray stone even in evidence inside the castle, with a billiard table, mantelpiece and four-poster bed made of slate.
Penrhyn Castle is surrounded by a variety of gardens and has a railroad museum.
