Banff - Cave & Basin Centennial Centre (Cave & Basin National Historic Site)

The Cave & Basin Centennial Centre grew up around the hot sulphur springs discovered in 1883. The Canadian National Park system developed here, based on the U.S. model. Exhibitions, slide-shows and computer games provide information on the national parks, two short instructive walks provide a key to the geology and the history of the hot springs which issue forth from a cave and to the specific ecological system linked thereto.

On the occasion of its centenary the historical buildings around the public swimming pool were restored. The swimming bath built in 1887 is a most imposing building.

From the Cave & Basin Centennial Centre a charming walkway and cycle path leads along Bow River and past some flat marshland - formed by beaver dams! - to Sundance Canyon.
