Darss (Fischland-Darss-Zingst Peninsula)

Darss - an area formerly difficult to access - is a tract of wooded country, rich in game, some 6,000 hectares/15,000 acres in extent, with a mile-long sandy beach, which forms the central section of the Fischland-Darss-Zingst peninsula on the Baltic coast. Originally the three parts of the peninsula were separate islands - Fischland into historical times, Darss until the 15th century, Zingst until 1874, when the Prerowstrom was closed off by a dike. Darss and Zingst form the greater part of the West Pomeranian Bodden National Park.
