The drive from Freeport to the settlement of West End is 27mi/43km in each direction. There is a single road to follow out and back, but the locals do this as a regular outing since the town is known for its conch fritters. Being the nearest point in the Bahamas to Florida, West End was a rum running town during American prohibition. Today its
old quays sprout small eateries and the beach is piled high with thousands of conch shells.
West End is the location of the Old Bahama Bay Resort and Marina (formerly Jack Tar Resort) which is adding gated luxury units and is restoring an airstrip to service. The location is those who want to relax in seclusion and not do partake of much city life.
West End Point boasts underwater caves good for scuba diving, beaches and a bird sanctuary.
