Altausseer See

To the north of Bad Aussee lies the Altausseer See, in a magnificent setting between the southwest faces of the Totes Gebirge. It is 3km/2mi long by 1km/0.75mi across. There is an open-air pool and rowing boats can be rented.

Loser
A panoramic road leads north from Altaussee by way of the Loserhütte (1,564m/5,131ft; inn) to the Augstsee (10km/6mi). From the parking lot at the Loserhütte it is an hour's climb to the summit of the Loser (1,838m/6,030ft), from which there are superb views.

On the shores of the Altausseer See is the little spa town of Altaussee (723m/2,372ft; pump room), also noted as a winter sports resort. The Salzsud works were originally sited here, but later moved to Bad Aussee.

From Altaussee the Aussee salt mine (3.3km/2mi northwest, alt. 948m/3,110ft) can be visited; a conducted tour lasts about 1.5 hours.
