Ayacucho - Holy Week Semana Santa

The Semana Santa celebration held in Ayacucho is famed for being one of the best in Peru. This week before Easter begins on the Friday before Palm Sunday and is kicked off with a procession honoring La Virgen de los Delores (Our Lady of Sorrows). The procession also involves shooting small stones out of slingshots into the crowd!

There are other processions throughout the Semana Santa, as well as entertainment, dancing, music, competitions, and food. The week raps up on Saturday before Easter Sunday with a huge party and fireworks set off at sunrise. Overall, Ayacucho's Semana Santa is a very fun-filled, colorful week.
