Uffington White Horse
|
|
Every tourist should be sure to visit this most famous of White Horses, cut in the turf of a hillside near Uffington (on the B 4507 between Swindon and Wantage). The 374ft/114m long horse is of uncertain date. One suggestion is that it was a tribal totem of the Iceni (first or second century BC) - a theory supported by the presence of an Iron Age fort (probably second century BC) known as Uffington Castle on the hilltop. The figure shows some resemblance to the horses depicted on late Iron Age coins.
