Zugspitze Attractions
The Zugspitze massif, part of the Wetterstein range, straddles the frontier between Germany and Austria, surrounded on three sides by deeply slashed valleys. The eastern summit (2,962m/9,718ft), crowned by a gilded cross, lies in Germany. The summit of the Zugspitze can be reached, on the Austrian side, by cableway (the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn) from Ehrwald-Obermoos, and on the German side by cog railroad (the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn) from Garmisch-Partenkirchen or by cabin cableway from the Eibsee.
Zugspitzplatt
Almost parallel to the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn is the difficult climb from the Wiener-Neustädter Hütte (2,213m/7,263ft) to the summit. The Hochmulde Zugspitzplatt, enclosed by a peak ridge, is a square area of 2.5 sq.km/1 sq. mi, well known as a skiing area where snow can be guaranteed.
