Zillertal Attractions

The Zillertal, now entirely developed for summer holidays and winter sports, is a side valley which opens off to the south of the Inn valley east of Innsbruck. The lower part of the valley, as far up as Zell, is a wide expanse of meadowland bordered on the west by the Tux Alps and on the east by the Kitzbühel Alps; the upper part narrows into a magnificent high Alpine valley, with side valleys running up into the glacier region of the Zillertal Alps.

The Zillertal is densely populated, and its people are noted for their love of singing. In May every year in Zell am Ziller the "Gauderfest" is held, a carnival procession with music and dancing.
Stillupptal
The road into the Stillupptal winds through the Stilluppklamm, a wooded gorge with several waterfalls, to the Stillupp reservoir and the adjoining Kasseler Hütte (2,177m/7,143ft; six hours). From here there is a fine view of the glaciated head of the valley, from which a number of neighboring peaks can be climbed.
Kaltenbach, Austria
Kaltenbach (551m/1,808ft) has a 15th C. parish church. On the eastern side of the valley, at the mouth of the Märzengrund, lies Stumm with its 16th C. castle (privately owned). Kaltenbach is the base for the Upper Zillertal ski center to the west; there is a cabin cableway to the Forstgartenhöhe (1,730m/5,676ft) and then a chairlift to 2,200m/7,200ft; there are numerous ski lifts. From the upper Zillertal road (Zillertaler Höhenstrasse; toll payable) there is a superb panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

Ziller Valley - Skiing
A Super Zillertal Ski-Pass gives the visitor access to 10 different resorts in the valley. One is the Hintertux glacier, where many national teams train during the fall when the snow has gone in the Southern Hemisphere and hasn't started falling in the Northern Hemisphere. The best-known resort in the region is Mayrhofen with its narrow streets and typical Tirolean architecture. Mayrhofen has one of the best ski schools for children. The skiing in the valley in general is best for beginners and lower intermediates. Zell am Ziller, Fugen and Finkenberg are other resorts in the area.

Zillergrund
To the east of Mayrhofen lies the Zillergrund, through which flows the Zillerbach with the Ziller Gründl reservoir. The road up the valley is free to vehicles as far as the Bärenbad Gaststätte (inn), but from Brandberg (1,092m/3,583ft) tolls are payable. From Brandberg the Bärenbad Alm (1,490m/4,889ft; refreshments in summer) at the head of the valley can be reached in 5 to 5.5 hours. This is the starting point for climbs to the Hundskehljoch (2,559m/8,396ft; four hours), on the Italian frontier, or the Plauener Hütte (2,362m/7,550ft; refreshments in summer; three hours).
