Tamsweg Attractions
The main place in the Lungau valley is Tamsweg (1,024m/3,360ft; pop. 4,400), an attractive market town with a Rathaus of 1570 and a Baroque parish church of 1741 (leisure center). In Kirchengasse not far from the church is the Lungau local museum (Heimatmuseum), exhibiting items from peasant life and church utensils.
This annual festival takes place in late August.
On a hill outside Tamsweg, enclosed within defensive walls, stands the pilgrimage church of St Leonard (1424-33), one of Austria's finest pilgrimage churches. Noteworthy are the valuable stained glass (1430-50), especially the Goldfenster ("Gold Window", painted mainly in blue and gold), the Gothic panel paintings on the altar (c. 1460) and the old frescos depicting bishops, the Apostles, etc.
