Near Stockerau (175m/574ft; pop. 14,000), on the northern edge of the Tulln basin, a road branches north to Hollabrunn. The poet Nikolaus Lenau (1802-50) often stayed with his grandfather in Stockerau, and he is remembered by two monuments, a room in the local museum and also the Lenau archives. There is also a grove to his memory in the nearby woodland meadows, which were one of his main inspirations. Performances and readings of his works are given in summer in the square in front of the parish church.The town of Stockerau has a variety of leisure facilities such as a sports centre with three gyms, judo and table tennis gym, skittle alley, indoor and outdoor tennis, and a football stadium.
Sierndorf, Austria
In Sierndorf is a Schloss (1516) with a Baroque staircase. In its chapel, now the parish church, can be seen some half-relief figures on the walls of the choir which are among the earliest Renaissance sculptures anywhere in Austria. The park was laid out by Prince Colloredo-Mansfeld.Sierndorf is located northwest of Vienna near Stockerau.
Sierndorf - Schloss Schönbrunn
5km/3mi to the north of Sierndorf, off the main road, lies Schloss Schönbrunn (by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, 1712-17), in a beautiful park, with an Orangery and, in an open field, the Chapel of St John Nepomuk (figure of the Saint under a canopy).
Heldenberg
22km/14mi northwest of Stockerau, near Kleinwetzdorf, can be found the Heldenberg, constructed in 1848-49, with a memorial hall, the grave of Field Marshal Radetzky and other monuments.
