St Gallenkirch Attractions

Farther up the Montafon from Schruns and Tschagguns lies St Gallenkirch (878m/2,881ft; pop. 2,000), a picturesque and rather straggling settlement with a parish church built in 1478 and altered in 1669; its harmonious Roccoco interior has several altars, a pulpit and an organ. From here a road leads 8km/5mi southwestward up the Gargallental to the health and winter sports resort of Gargellen (1,424m/4,672ft), nestling between the Rätikon and Silvretta massifs. A chairlift ascends the Schafberg (upper station 2,100m/6,890ft; ski lifts). It is a climb of five to six hours to the summit of the Madrisaspitze (2,770m/9,088ft) or the Madrisahorn (2,836m/9,305ft), which is in Switzerland.
