High above the west bank of the River Inn, between Nauders and Landeck, nestles the old mountain and pilgrimage focal point of Serfaus (1,427m/4,682ft; pop. 830), now a popular summer and winter resort. It boasts two medieval churches, the Old Parish Church (Alte Pfarrkirche, 1332) and the New Parish Church (Neue Pfarrkirche, c. 1500); in the older church is a picture, said to have miraculous powers, of the Madonna and Child seated on the Throne (12th C.). No cars are allowed in Serfaus (underground hover rail). There are cableways to the Komperdellalm (2,000m/6,560ft; good skiing), and lifts up to 2,475m/8,123ft. Southwest of Serfaus rears the Hexenkopf (3,038m/9,968ft), the highest peak in the Samnaun group.
