Niedere Tauern Attractions

The Hohe Tauern range is continued, east of the Murtörl (source of the River Mur), by the Niedere Tauern, with the Enns, Palten and Liesing valleys to the north and the Mur valley to the south. Many densely wooded and thinly populated valleys cut into the range on either side, but there are few low passes between the two sides. Many small mountain lakes lie hidden in the high valleys and hollows. The higher peaks in the main range are not easy to climb, usually requiring good rock climbing experience, but there are also many easier peaks commanding magnificent views. The Niedere Tauern also offer some of the most varied skiing terrain in Salzburg and Styria.
Katschberg, Austria
The Carinthian resort of Katschberg is an upscale resort. All but two hotels are in the four and five-star category and there is free child care for those with young children who want to hit the slopes for the day. More than 70 km of trails, including one run that is 12 km long, provide plenty of variety and those who don't have the budget for a top hotel, the village of Rennweg has a range of accommodation including guesthouses and apartments and is linked to the Katschberg ski area by a frequent, free shuttle service.

This area offers an unusual ski experience. You can be pulled through a scenic woodland area on skis by a horse.

Rottenmanner Tauern
The last part of the Niedere Tauern range is the Rottenmanner Tauern. The sharp edged Grosser Bösenstein (2,449m/8,035ft) can be climbed from Trieben by way of the Edelraute-Hütte (1,725m/5,660ft) on the Kleiner Scheiblsee, the Hochreichart (2,147m/7,930ft) from Kallwang or from the quiet Ingeringgraben (Ingeringsee), near Knittelfeld, to the south. These and many other mountains, particularly around the village of Hohentauern, on the pass, attract more visitors for winter sports than in summer.
