Modling Attractions
North of Baden lies the town of Mödling (240m/787ft; pop. 19,000), a favorite excursion venue for the people of Vienna. Beethoven lived at Hauptstrasse 79 from 1818-20 and Arnold Schönberg at Bernhardgasse 6 from 1918-25. Mödling has a Renaissance Rathaus (Town Hall) dating from 1548; the church of St Othmar (Late Gothic), with a Late Romanesque charnel house with old frescos, is also worth visiting.
Beethoven composed some of the sections of his Missa Solemnis while staying in Mödling, which is why the piece is so often played at local festivals and other special events.

Föhrenberge Nature Park
Above the town of Mödling (20minutes' walk along a footpath) are Schloss Liechenstein (16th C., restored in Neo-Classical style 1820-22) and Burg Liechtenstein, with a 12th C. Romanesque chapel. These two buildings form the central point of a nature park which also contains a number of artificial ruins.
