Mauterndorf Attractions
Mauterndorf (1,122m/3,675ft; pop. 1,600), on the road which runs northwestward to the Tauern pass, is a summer and winter sports resort. This impressive little town is dominated by an old castle built on the foundations of a Roman fort; the chapel has Gothic frescos and a winged altar of 1452. The castle now serves as a cultural center, with theatrical performances, concerts, exhibitions and lectures.
