Mattersburg - Burg Forchtenstein Attractions
On a high crag near Mattersburg proudly stands the massive Burg Forchtenstein (alt. 504m/1,654ft), one of the finest castles in Austria. Originally founded in the early 14th century, it was rebuilt by the Esterházys between 1635 and 1652 as a powerfully fortified stronghold. A series of gates and courtyards lead into the interior, the most notable features of which are the rich collection of arms and armor, the Hunting Hall, the Armory and the collection of carriages. The well, 142m/466ft deep, is thought to have been dug by Turkish prisoners. A Grillparzer Festival is held in the castle in summer, with performances of his plays.
