Lungau Attractions

The Lungau, is in the southeast of Salzburg province. From the Taurach valley, traversed by the southern section of the Tauern pass road, numerous smaller valleys branch off, giving access to the mountains with their rushing mountain streams, their lakes and attractive little villages.

The Langau is a wide forest covered basin (alt. 1,000- 1,200m/3,300-3,900ft) watered by the tributary streams which form the River Mur and lying between the Schladminger Tauern (part of the Niedere Tauern) to the north and the Gurktal Alps to the south. Open only to the east, it is cut in two by the long flat-topped ridge of the Mitterberg (1,581m/5,187ft). In winter it is one of the coldest areas in Austria. Many old customs have been preserved in this remote high valley, including the "Samson Processions", in which the (often over-lifesize) figures of Samson traditionally serve as a symbol of fertility. Until 1975 the Lungau could be reached from the north only by the Tauernpass Road (height of pass 1,739m/5,706ft), from the south only by way of the Katschberg (1,641m/5,384ft). Now, however, the Tauern motorway (toll), passing through the Tauern Tunnel (6.5km/4mi) to the north and the Katschberg Tunnel (5km/3mi) to the south, has opened up this sunny valley, with its fine walking country and its new winter sports facilities.
Hochgolling
A rewarding day's walk from Tamsweg is up the Göriach valley (to the north) to the Hochgolling (2,863m/9,394ft), the highest peak in the Schladminger Tauern.
Mariapfarr, Austria
In the north of the Lungau nestles Mariapfarr (1,120m/3,675ft; pop. 1,800), a little town frequented by skiers (numerous lifts). The pilgrimage church is worth a visit; it contains a crucifix of 1430 in St George's chapel, a cross in the form of a triumphal arch, a "Standing Madonna with Child", and panels from the Gothic high altar (c. 1500) which now form part of the Neo-Gothic altar. When restoration work was being carried out in the choir in 1946 some fine frescos were uncovered, showing scenes from the life of Jesus.

Prebersee
A road 9.5km/6mi long runs northeastward from Tamsweg to the Prebersee (1,492m/4,895ft); on the last weekend in August a sporting competition known as the Wasserscheibenschiessen (firing at targets across the lake) is held. The area around the lake is also popular with skiers. From here it is a 3.5 hours' climb to the summit of the Preber (2,741m/8,993ft) to the north, from which there are fine views of the Lungau.
Schloss Moosham
About 6km/4mi south of Mauterndorf stands Schloss Moosham, an impressive building divided into a lower and an upper castle. In the upper part is a chapel with a beautiful fresco and Gothic stained glass.

Zederhaus Valley and Grosser Hafner
To the west of St Michael the Zederhaus valley, through which the highway runs to Salzburg, joins the Mur valley. In the Mur valley a road leads westward via Muhr (1,124m/3,688ft) to Rotgülden; from there it is a four to five hour climb by way of the Unterer Rotgüldensee (1702m/5584ft; mountain hut) and the Oberer Rotgüldensee (1710m/5611ft) to the summit of the Grosser Hafner (3076m/10,092ft).
