(Local Name: Niederösterreich) Lower Austria is the largest of the nine Austrian provinces, including within its area the Federal capital, Vienna (itself a separate province, where the provincial government at present has its headquarters (the provincial capital is St Pölten). Lower Austria is bounded on the north and east by the Czech Republic, on the southeast by the province of Burgenland, on the south by Styria and on the west by Upper Austria.
