11km/7mi south of Freistadt lies Kefermarkt (512m/1,680ft; pop. 1,800), an old town in the valley of the Feldaist. The parish church of St Wolfgang boasts a superb Gothic carved altar of limewood (1409-97; renovated 1852-55; 13.5m/44ft high), with life-size figures of St Wolfgang in bishop's robes, flanked by St Christopher and Peter. The name of the artist is not known. The altar was carved on instructions from the owners of Schloss Weinberg, one of the mightiest buildings in the Mühlviertel. Standing in an imposing position high above the town to the north, the castle (17th C.; renovated in the 20th C.) is noted for its Ancestral Hall, Knights' Hall and Imperial Hall, all with beautifully carved ceilings, and the wrought iron Türkengitter ("Turkish Screen") on the staircase. Concerts are held in the Knights' Hall during the summer months.
