The attractive little market town of Gutenstein (482m/1,581ft), to the northwest of Wiener Neustadt, is a pleasant summer holiday resort. The cemetery contains the grave of the dramatist Ferdinand Raimund, and there is also a monument to him. Also of interest is the Forestry Museum in the Alte Hofmühle, a specialized museum documenting the
woodworking occupations once widespread in the region. Above the town loom the ruins of Burg Gutenstein (580m/1,903ft; fine view), where Frederick the Handsome died in 1330. 3km/2mi to the southwest rises the Mariahilfer Berg (705m/2,313ft) with a Baroque pilgrimage church (1668-1724).
