Located to the southeast of the Klopeiner See, beneath the southern side of a low wooded hill, the Kulm (627m/2,057ft), the resort of Eberndorf (477m/1,565ft; pop. 4,500) is known for its former Augustinian monastery above the town. The monastery, founded about 1150, was fortified during the Turkish wars of the 15th C.; from 1603-1783 it was held by the Jesuits; and in 1809 the property was made over to the abbey of St Paul. The church has a separate belfry (15th C.), Gothic ceiling paintings in the choir and a crypt of c. 1380. The statue of Our Lady on the high altar (c. 1480), that of St Florian (1520) on the east altar and the tomb of Christoph Ungnad von Sonnegg, victor over the Turks (d. 1490), are all of interest.
